Argentina is sharply increasing corn exports as the suspension of Ukrainian grain shipments supports global prices and encourages South American suppliers to replace Ukrainian origin in European Union and Asian markets.
According to market participants, Argentine corn exports could nearly double in August from 3.22 million tonnes in July to 6.56 million tonnes. Shipments completed or planned during the first eight months of 2026 total 33.8 million tonnes. September exports are currently scheduled at 3.5 million tonnes, although actual shipments could reach 6 million tonnes or more.
The increase is supported by a forecast Argentine corn harvest of 64–70 million tonnes. Some 52.5 million tonnes had been harvested from 81% of the planted area.
December Chicago corn futures reportedly rose 14.5% to $211/tonne, while Argentine FOB values increased by approximately $20/tonne to $200/tonne. Ukrainian corn remains in demand among EU buyers, but western-border rail and road costs of $80–150/tonne are restricting flows. Ukrainian FCA prices are reported at $150–160/tonne, creating significant competitiveness pressure as South American and EU supplies build.
