Australia’s agricultural outlook has strengthened after ABARES raised its forecast for 2026/27 winter crop production by 12% from its June estimate to 61 million tonnes. The Australian Crop Report, dated September 1, attributed the revision to better-than-expected winter rainfall in southern and southeastern regions, which improved soil moisture and accelerated crop development by three to four weeks.
The canola production forecast was increased to 7.3 million tonnes, 37% above the 10-year average but 5% below the previous season’s 7.7 million tonnes. The estimate reflects a record planted area of 9.5 million hectares, up 2%, offset by lower yields in Western Australia. Wheat production is now projected at 29.9 million tonnes, up from 26.7 million, while barley rose from 14.1 million to 16.4 million tonnes.
The larger Australian crop outlook is relevant to global wheat, barley and canola trade, potentially adding export availability and competition for European and Black Sea suppliers. However, the immediate impact on regional physical flows and prices remains uncertain.
